Cow products (Panchagavya) are getting a lot of attention these days, be it cow dung, cow urine, milk, ghee or curd. Cow urine especially, is promoted as an alternative medicine in India for numerous diseases including cancer, diabetes and tuberculosis. A lot of research work is going on these traditional Indian methods for curing life threatening diseases and their results also approves the age old medicine.
For thousands of years, people in India have used cow urine and cow dung for different purposes in their daily and ceremonial activities. Being highly recommended by the scriptures, it is considered holy and safe to use. For many years, research has been conducted on how to make the recipes based on scriptural information.
What is Diabetes
Diabetes, often referred to by doctors as diabetes mellitus, describes a group of metabolic diseases in which the person has high blood glucose (blood sugar), either because insulin production is inadequate, or because the body's cells do not respond properly to insulin, or both. Patients with high blood sugar will typically experience polyuria (frequent urination) and they will become increasingly thirsty (polydipsia) and hungry (polyphagia). Diabetes occurs when the sugar concentration in the blood increases. Control of diabetes begins with a healthy lifestyle.
- Type 1 Diabetes - the body does not produce insulin. Approximately 10% of all diabetes cases are type 1.
- Type 2 Diabetes - the body becomes resistant to insulin. Approximately 90% of all cases of diabetes worldwide are of this type.
Causes and Symptoms of Diabetes

Research work on diabetes treatment with cow urine therapy
A research conducted by Edwin Jarald and his team on antidiabetic activity of cow urine and herbal preparation prepared using cow urine concluded that cow urine is a very good healer for diabetes.
As per their research - A herbal preparation prepared by the traditional healers of Mandsaur using cow urine and Gymnemasylvestre R. Br. (Asclepiadaceae), Momordicacharantia L. (Cucurbitaceae), Eugenia jambolana Lam. (Myrtaceae), Aegle marmelos Correa (Rutaceae), CinnamomumtamalaBuch.-Ham. (Lauraceae), Aloe barbadensis Linn. (Liliaceae), and Trigonellafoenum-graecum L. (Leguminosae) is being used in the treatment of diabetes. The herbal preparations significantly (P < 0.05, P < 0.01) lowered the blood sugar level. Comparatively, the cow urine preparation showed better activity than did the preparation prepared using water. Fresh cow urine also exhibited significant antidiabetic effect. This study supports the claim of the local traditional healers.
Another study done in 2012 and published in the journal, ‘Ancient Science of Life’ suggested rats with diabetes, that were fed Gomutra Ark had significantly lower blood glucose levels than rats in a control group did. "This study supports the traditional use of Gomutra Ark in diabetes," the researchers wrote, noting that it has a "high therapeutic index and is safe for chronic use."

How to take cow urine?
In traditional but to be on the safer time, for all practical purposes, it is better to drink distilled cow urine. Since boiling is involved, cow urine distillate will be free from microbes. There are many companies that sell distilled cow urine.

Cow urine dose
For a start, it is better to start with 3-4 drops of cow urine one or two times a day.
After a week, the dose can be increased up to one spoon two times a day. While there is no fixed dose as such, that is the maximum advisable dose of cow urine (or distillate).
If it is freshly available, then it can be taken as such, within 10 – 15 minutes of collecting it.
In case of cow urine tablets (gomutra ghanvati), take 1-2 tablets early morning and before sleeping with water.
Precautions to take before drinking cow urine:
- It is not advisable to store raw cow urine for more than an hour.
- It is better to take the cow urine for the prescribed time period only.
- It is better to consult Ayurvedic expert before consuming cow urine for specific disease.
There are multiple ways in which cow urine can be consumed like fresh gaumutra (cow urine), distilled Gau-mutra, Gau-asav or Gaumutra ghanvati (cow urine tablets). Gaumutra ghanvati is a good substitute for gau-mutra and gau-asav. If for some reason gaumutra and gaumutra asav cannot be taken, person can take gaumutra ghanvati tablets.
