It is a milky fluid that comes from the breasts of all mammalian mothers (like humans, cows, and other mammals) the first few days after giving birth and before true milk appears. It is rich in proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals, and antibodies that fight disease-causing agents such as bacteria and viruses. It is vastly different in its nutritional composition than regular milk like antibody levels in colostrum can be 100 times higher than levels in regular cow’s milk. Because of its vast benefits, cow’s colostrum is consumed by adults also. In India it is known as guta and is used for making Posu (sweet dish prepared from cow’s colostrum milk) while kalvdans is a Swedish dessert prepared from cow’s colostrum.

Proline-Rich-Polyepitides (PRPs) and immunoglobulins (lgG, lgA, lgE, lgM & lgD) are most important ingredients of colostrum, which regulates thymus gland and helps improving the immune system. It also contains Lactoferin, an iron binding protein, which helps remove the rusty old iron that is floating around the body for too long. It also helps releasing iron into the RBCs (Red Blood Cells) enhancing oxidation of tissues. This way colostrum helps boosting our immune system which fights against infections and diseases.

Colostrum is good for growth. It helps in DNA, RNA repair and supports anabolic activities that involve tissue regeneration. Main growth factors present in colostrum are somatomedins or insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1, IGF-2), somatotropin, fibroblast growth factor (FGF), transforming growth factors (TGF), platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) and epithelial growth factor (EGF). These growth factors function as intercellular signalling molecules to turn on or turn off the production of specific protein in the target cell.
